Meet the Staff at the Heart of Companion Animal Care Center

Dawn Johnston, D.V.M.

Dawn Johnston, D.V.M.

At the age of nine, Dr. Johnston’s interest in veterinary medicine began. She started her education at The University of Delaware and continued on to The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, where she graduated in 1990. She then spent the next ten years working at several veterinary clinics. Finally, on May 15, 2000, she fulfilled her dream and bought her own practice, Companion Animal Care Center. Since then we have been steadily growing, specializing in the treatment of cats and dogs. Dr. Johnston is certified on the K-Laser for therapeutic treatments of dogs & cats & also in Fear Free protocols.

When not here running the show, Dr. Johnston enjoys being outside, hiking or at the beach, and walking her dog, Ginny.

Sarah, Customer Service Representative

Sarah joined Companion in February 2020. She is our evening customer service representative. She's a rock-star and does a great job keeping us organized and on task! Sarah is Fear Free certified!



In her free time she likes to game, read, and spend time with her boyfriend.

Jacob, Veterinary Assistant

Jacob joined our team in August 2021. He started as a kennel assistant and has worked his way into the role of assistant. Jacob is currently in the process of applying to veterinary school and is also Fear Free certified.


When not in school or working, Jacob enjoys tending to his chickens and playing with his dogs.

Haley, Receptionist and Customer Service Representative

Haley joined Companion in August 2021 as our morning receptionist. She previously worked in human medicine, so she has had a fairly smooth transition learning about the veterinary industry. Haley is Fear Free Certified.


In her free time, she enjoys gaming and relaxing with her dogs, Samantha, Cash, and her boyfriend.

Katy, Veterinary Assistant

Katy started with us in August 2023. She has been working in a kennel for the last 2 years but wanted to expand her experience to the medical side of our industry.  She has finished her Dog Trainer program and completed the Fear Free Trainer certification.  She has opened a dog training business, Pawddicord Training. 


In her free time, Katy loves to attend concerts, bake, knit, read and play with her 3 kitties & gecko.
